GM Daewoo Auto & Technology Company (GM DAEWOO) introduced to the all-new intermediate sedan, the Lacetti, to the Korean market today.

According to Nick Reilly, President and CEO of GM DAEWOO, "The Lacetti is the first model introduced by GM DAEWOO since the new company was launched. We think customers will find this car a great illustration of the promise that GM Daewoo represents for Korea."

The Lacetti went into production after a development period of only 30 months. Its styling and interior design were achieved through a joint effort by world-renowned Italian design company Pininfarina and the Design Center of the GM Daewoo Technology Laboratory.

Intensive Testing Procedures

The name "Lacetti" is derived from the Latin word "Lacertus," which means "energetic, muscular, youthful and full of strength." In order to prove the car could live up to its name, it underwent numerous durability tests at Millbrook and MIRA in Great Britain, extreme hot weather tests in Granada, Spain, extreme cold weather tests in Argeplog, Sweden, performance tests in the highland areas of Lizang, China, and crash tests at MGA of the United States. In addition, it triumphed in numerous other tests conducted around the world by acknowledged testing agencies. In total, the car was put through 1.8 million kilometers of durability tests, various inclement weather adjustment tests and more than 190crash tests.

Highest Safety Rating

The Lacetti received the highest possible rating in the 64-kilometer-per-hour IIHS Test conducted by the American Insurance Association. High-tension steel sheet has been applied to over 40 percent of its body. In addition, a "survival zone" is built into the Lacetti’s body. The car interior’s hexagonal structure is designed for optimum absorption of collision shocks. As a result, the direction of shock energy is deflected at the instant of a collision away from the passengers for maximum protection.

The Lacetti protects both the head and torso of the driver as well as the right front seat passenger with two sets of air bags. In addition to the two front air bags, which protect the heads of front seat passengers in head-on collisions, the Lacetti is also equipped with side-impact air bags, which serve to protect the torsos of the occupants in the case of side-impact collisions.

Extremely Quiet Ride

With numerous noise suppression systems, the Lacetti offers passengers an exceptionally quiet ride reminiscent of a much larger sedan. Connecting the alternator, power lamp and air-conditioning compressor with one belt has reduced engine noise. Considerably superior durability is achieved, as the belt tension is controlled by an autotensioner.

Using a hydraulic engine mounting with both the engine and transmission has further cut engine noise. The passengers even in harsh road conditions do not feel engine vibration. The installed road-type torque reaction stops engine vibration from reaching the car body and effectively controls quick vibration arising from engine surges, such as during quick starts, sudden acceleration and sudden braking.

Engine noise is trapped by an insulation-equipped engine cover. A thicker sound dampener is used throughout the Lacetti, resulting in efficient sound reduction. Furthermore, the noise route is effectively blocked by the filter foam sealing process.

Intake noise has been reduced by using a 7.8-liter air cleaner and 8-liter resonator. Exhaust noise has been greatly reduced through the Lacetti’s triple muffler system, which has a center muffler and a large-volume (22.8-liter) muffler. Wind noise has been reduced through an installed rain channel, which also prevents rain from flowing down the front side windows.

Modern Fuel-Efficient Engine

The Lacetti is equipped with a new 1.5-liter DOHC E-TEC II engine that is characterized by high power, low fuel consumption and low noise. With maximum power of 106/6,000 and maximum torque of 14.2/4,200, the Lacetti provides both high performance and high efficiency.

A cylinder head and an induction valve device were added to the previous E-TEC II engine, and a newly designed adjustable induction system was applied for optimum air intake. The Lacetti can reach a speed of 100 kilometers per hour in less than 13 seconds. It has a maximum speed of 183 kilometers per hour. Six coolant pipes lower the average temperature of the engine’s cylinder head bloc, leading to better engine performance, lower fuel consumption and increased durability.

The Lacetti comes equipped with a choice of lightweight, high-efficiency transmissions: a five-speed manual or low-speed automatic transmission. The fuel consumption rate of the 1.5DOHC A/T is 14.0. The M/T is 15.8.

Good Handling and Road Holding

. Speed-adjusting power steering, solid suspension setting and its lightweight ensure an exceptional nimble driving performance. The Lacetti offers self-adjusting power steering that varies depending on the car’s speed. The car optimizes driving stability at lower speeds and adjusts automatically to increase driving pleasure.

A front stabilizer bar installed directly on the strut enhances maneuverability. An H-type highly rigid, front-cross member, midsize car damper, dual-link rear suspension, rear wheel bearings and pigtail spring applications further enhance driving performance.

The Lacetti comes with the Bosch 4-sensor, 4-channel ABS system with EBD (Electronic Brake-Force Distribution). This gives the driver better control by automatically distributing braking force according to the number of passengers, vehicle load and road conditions. The Lacetti’s ABS system enables it to come to a complete stop within 42 meters from a speed of 100 kilometers per hour. TCS, another feature of the Lacetti’s ABS system, senses slippage of the wheels - which can occur when the vehicle starts or makes a sharp turn on slippery roads - and prevents the vehicle from sliding.

The Lacetti provides maximum safety due to an array of enhanced safety features. For example, rear wheels come with disc brakes and 7+8 inch Tandem Boosters, enabling superior heat protection and braking force.

Modern, State-of-the-Art Design

A dynamic new subcompact vehicle, the Lacetti boasts a muscular hood and sleek cylinder-shaped headlights. A newly designed chrome-plated radiator grill gives the Lacetti a touch of luxury and dynamism, while the complementing hood emphasizes strength. The four-part cylindrical headlights are not only beautifully designed but also project brilliant white light.

A simple yet muscular-looking 5-mile front bumper provides excellent shock absorption. Crystal-clear fog lamps ensure safe driving in foggy and rainy weather conditions as well as at night.

The Lacetti’s unique greenhouse design gave birth to this six-window (additional quarter glasses), which give it a free flowing silhouette. High wheel arches leave a strong impression. Chrome-processed door handles and bodyside molding add a refined and rich feel.

See-through high-tech taillights are similar to the headlights in shape. Rear auxiliary stop lamps help increase passive safety. The taillights also boast an artistic side with their flower-shaped reflector beams when the brakes are applied.

Roomiest Interior in Its Class

With a length of 1,925 millimeters, width of 1,460 millimeters and height of 1,180 millimeters, the interior of the Lacetti is spacious. It is designed to cater to the needs of leisure-loving Koreans. Telling examples of how the Lacetti makes the most of its available space are its seats. The rear seats, which include three adjustable headrests, can be individually folded with a 60/40 percent split. In addition, the ski-through seats allow the convenient loading of long sports gear, such as skis.

The Lacetti differentiates itself through luxurious design. Its interior styling is based on a horizontal theme, which is usually found in luxury sedans only. Its unique two-tone island-type color matching of beige and black results in a neat and graceful interior. The wood grain has been selectively chosen to harmonize with the beige, again giving the Lacetti a luxurious air. The silver metal grain used in the center fascia adds a modern and sensual touch.

The elegantly designed dashboard in a three-circle formation is made more visible by silvering. The jade green illumination and translucent cover create a misty and elegant mood and enhance visibility during night driving.

High-Tech Features are Standard

Safety is enhanced through safety one-touch power windows, which automatically slide down when blocked. A steering wheel with audio remote controls and hands-free functions help the driver keep his or her eyes on the road.

The Lacetti’s telescopic steering wheel also enables manual adjustment of the wheel (in and out) according to the size and driving habits of the driver. An electric driver-side mirror makes driving through narrow alleys and parking more convenient. Electric interior and map lamps make reading books and maps easier at night.

Numerous Luxury Features

A battery-saving feature is the automatic lights-out system. Taillights are automatically switched off when the engine is turned off. Headlights and fog lights switch off when the key is removed from the ignition.

Heated front seats offer comfortable driving in winter. The Lacetti’s illuminated keyhole makes starting the engine an easy procedure even at night. Its remote control key has added functions; besides locking and unlocking doors and opening the trunk, it also has an alarm system built in. A driver’s seat car mat hook holds the mat in place, improving driver stability.

Driving is comfortable in the Lacetti even in rain, snow or intense sunlight. Weather Pack system clears rain and snow away, while offering UV protection. Heat strips built into the lower part of the windshield have an anti-freezing function for front wipers. A rain sensor system gauges the amount of rainfall and controls wiper speed accordingly. A special water repellant windshield optimizes the driver’s range of view; rain slides away smoothly.

Convenience Features

The Lacetti is the first intermediate sedan built in Korea equipped with a cooling box. With air conditioner ventilation in the glove compartment, beverages can be kept cool in summer. The Lacetti’s list of conveniences does not stop there. It also includes back seat door trim pockets, additional compartments under the glove compartment, an under-seat tray, multi-boxes in front and back seats, seat side pockets, a luxurious console and card holder, ticket holders in front of the driver’s seat and on the sun visor, and a sunglass case.
