Let's describe the variable valve timing system variations are used in Toyota engines. Short article is dedicated to each of them.

VVT gen.I (1991-2001) - - timing drive by belt for both camshafts, two-position variable valve timing mechanism with helical splines in the intake camshaft pulley (4A-GE type'91 silvertop and type'95 blacktop).

VVT-i gen.II (1995-2004) - timing drive by belt for both camshafts, continuous variable valve timing mechanism with helical splines in the intake camshaft pulley (1JZ-GE type'96, 2JZ-GE type'95, 1JZ-GTE type'00, 3S-GE type'97). Sub-type - Dual VVT-i - with variable valve timing mechanisms at both camshafts (3S-GE type'98).

VVT-i gen.III (1997-2012) - timing drive by belt and gear drive between camshafts, variable valve timing mechanism with bladed rotor at the front or rear side of camshaft (1MZ-FE type'97, 3MZ-FE, 3S-FSE, 1JZ-FSE, 2JZ-FSE, 1G-FE type'98, 1UZ-FE type'97, 2UZ-FE type'05, 3UZ-FE).

VVT-i gen.IV (1997-..) - timing drive by chain for both camshafts, variable valve timing mechanism with bladed rotor in the intake camshaft sprocket (series NZ, AZ, ZZ, SZ, KR, 1GR-FE type'04).

VVTL-i (1999-2005) - sub-type of 4th generation - VVT-i with the variable valve lifting system (two-position - with two cams of different profiles) (2ZZ-GE).

DVVT-i (2004-..) - timing drive by chain for both camshafts, variable valve timing mechanism with bladed rotor in the intake and exhaust camshaft sprockets (series AR, ZR, NR, GR, UR, LR).

Valvematic (2007-..) - DVVT, combined with the continuously variable valve lift system (1ZR-FAE, 2ZR-FAE, 3ZR-FAE).

VVT-iE gen.I (2006-..) - timing drive by chain, electrical variable valve timing mechanism for intake and traditional hydraulic VVT for exhaust (1UR-FSE, 2UR-FSE).

VVT-iE gen.II (2014-..) - timing drive by chain, electrical variable valve timing mechanism for intake and traditional hydraulic VVT for exhaust (A25, M20, M15, V35, 1NR-FKE, 2NR-FKE).

VVT-iW (2015-..) - timing drive by chain for both camshafts, variable valve timing mechanism with bladed rotor in the intake and exhaust camshaft sprockets (6AR-FSE, 8AR-FTS, 8NR-FTS, 2GR-FKS, M15).
